We did this big with a roadbike on 23-7-2018 from the east-side. The track leads you through a private road. I had to walk up some parts but because of the rolling stones, I had to walk down the same parts, because it was to dangarous to cycle.

The climb is indeed almost impossible with a road bike. The road was in june 2016 also full of loose gravel. There were 'roadworks' at the latest part, so had to go by foot.
Impressive climb, recommend it to anyone... with an mtb.

The BIG website states you can go to the top on a roadbike. This is correct if you have 25 or better 28 mm tires, very low gears (to keep traction) and a lot of guts. The road (June 2015) was full of loose gravel and from the group of 7 only one of us, me ;), made it to the top. The last kilometer has parts that can not be done on a road bike (too steep with this gravel in some sections). According to the locals it is OK when there is race like the Giro as the road gets prepared then by a road roller. (But the 'kick' of getting to the top was great, even as I did it with a road bike using my 26x30 at 6 km/h at the last unpaved part ;) )
